Business cards – where business begins!

This guest blog is from Jo at Oyster studios who specialise in brand and designing marketing campaigns. www.oysterstudios.com
The exchange of a business card represents the beginning of most business relationships and opportunities. This blog explores what makes a good business card that will create the right first impression and be both useful and memorable.
Face-to-face introductions leave a long-lasting mark on the successful positioning of your brand. But networking events and trade shows are busy places, with lots of names and faces to remember. It is important your business card reminds your new connections who you are and why they might want to get in touch.
Firstly ensure all the details included are clear, concise, and relevant – keep your card functional and make sure it reflects your brand style.
Your logo should be in a prominent location with clear stand out for easy recognition and re-call.
Consider including a strap-line message or positioning statement to set you apart from your competition and encourage another conversation.
Are you easy to reach? Ensure you include all relevant contact details, phone, email, website and social media.
Having said that don’t add too much content or clutter and ensure you leave space for a prospect or client to write a reference note to themselves. (Avoid dark colours or laminates, which can be hard to write on.)
Do take advantage of both sides of the card for additional space for your messaging. Bullet points are a great way to briefly summarise your service proposition and remind people of the benefits of what you offer.
Do invest in quality paper stock and finishes. A flimsy card is rather like a flimsy hand-shake and does not inspire confidence! Fine details like foil finishes or a spot varnish create a premium feel and the impression of a professional organisation.
Consider having a portfolio of cards to cater for different prospects. For instance, for international clients, how about printing business cards in different languages? If you work in different sectors consider creating bespoke cards with differentiated messaging and website details with targeted landing pages.
There is no denying business cards are an important tool for your business so take the time to re-evaluate yours – remember they say as much about you and your business as you do!
